The Ogmore residential study centre is situated on the heritage coast overlooking the Bristol Channel with views of The Welsh Coast in all directions. The brief to provide study bedrooms, indoor and outdoor classrooms, a small laboratory, lecture theatre and administrative offices was based on a clear set of architectural aims and objectives established with the client through a series of detailed design workshops and charettes with local school groups.
The aims of the residential eco-centre were as follows:
- To develop, build and run a building that employs the best practices in sustainable design and living
- To develop a building that is a living/learning experience and an exemplar of best practice in sustainability
- To develop a building that will play a ‘didactic’ role in demonstrating sustainable design
- The building will use a combination of passive design measures and renewable energy
- technologies in order to produce ‘zero-carbon’ emissions and possibly be a nett energy producer.
